Joy Turned into Sadness

I was heartbroken. When I awakened on Wednesday morning, I heard the newscaster say that all but one of the miners were dead. The night before, I listened to Geraldo Rivera state that all of the miners were alive. He could barely speak, his harsh throat straining to speak above the hysteria. Now, this morning, I had to fight back tears as I listened to one man describe how the joy and singing outside the church turned into anger and cursing.

Did God change in that period of time? God did not change, but man certainly did. God will allow us to be tested to see if we really walk by faith, and not by sight.

Finally, I grieved as I listened to one reporter interviewing the aunt of one of the victims on the phone. The reporter was reacting to a comment that the woman made about how she found out about all of the events while watching the channel that was interviewing her. He replied by commenting that someone else began to spread the false information, and not their station. That may be so, but don't reporters have an obligation to verify their sources before they report news? I think it to be no surprise that so many are quick to avoid responsibility. It is a sad commentary on our society. I pray that we all learn the power of personal responsibility.

It's amazing to me (although I shouldn't be surprised) how quickly one single statement can be taken out of context and changed and spread like wildfire. How sad for these families.

It's a sad commentary. The situation was horrific enough, and made worse by false hope.

(I guess not accepting responsibility goes all the way back to Eden: Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent.)

The media make it so easy for us to hate them (tv news) because
1. they are wrong so often
2. the rarely admit it
3. they have sold their soul
4. when things go wrong because of them - they say "we were just doing our job!"
5. They like to become the stoty ( geraldo is a whore) and not just report it

Kc,

I see now where the media is defending its airing of the misinformation by stating that it got the information from confirmed sources (the governor). I will at least give USA Today credit for apologizing for the error.

Rose, thank you for your comments.

Kristi, you summed it up in your last sentence. Yet, the God of our circumstances does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I think it sad that some have said their faith is in question, as if to blame God for the error.

Seeker, you are so right about the blame game! I am writing a book about that now.

David,

I realized a long time ago that the media is a business like all others. They will do what they can to sell news.

Reporters are the best source of information about how to pass the buck.

I understand that the governor did ask for the information to be verified. Everyone at the the mine were celebrating, having misheard themselves. Th verified information was also wrong.

But to the other point. From praises to curses... that is unsettling.

I understand hurt and grief (I lost a child), but in terms of how we relate to God, we should be slow to change our faith.

This isn't to say that it is wrong to question God regarding our lives, and they can be tough questions... but if our faith is fickle we have nothing.
